“Her…” annalise henderson. Mauville’s ranger captain. Inoue Hitoshi’s target. It wasn’t personal, back in Sootopolis. Wrong place, wrong time on both sides. Both are cast on opposite sides of a war. It’s not personal, to kill the opposition.[break]
When she pierced his back with that tanto, her gift to him for his promotion, it became personal. As a creature of comfort and a creature of habit, he cannot abide the feeling of being unsafe in his own land. A wiser being might reflect that’s how many in this fractured, wartorn region now feel. Annalise renders unto Rocket what is Rocket’s.[break]
All Hitoshi knows is that she’s here, somewhere along the route. Mauville’s ranger captain is on the frontlines, trying to push back against Declan Walsh’s forces. He slips on a mask bearing the visage of a snarling demonic dog, suits up in dark combat gear, and sets out as the sun grows low. Creeping past his own lines, over into League territory, he spies his target.[break]
“One shot.” He whispers under his breath, drawing his shadowed sword. The Hasegawa Muramasa is curious about what a ranger’s blood tastes like. Its eye swirls between Hitoshi and Annalise. It understands its appointed role.[break]
It disappears into one shadow, sneaking into another. It’s almost perfect until human error gives it away with just two words.[break]
“Nothin’ personal!” Hitoshi lies.

“Mmm…nah!” He grins a human’s malicious grin, full of petty spite and base malice. Neither of them seriously suspected he would leave simply because he Annalise asked him to – not after the scars they’ve left on one another.[break]
“Didn’t know who ya were before.” Walking into view, he flicks his wrist. It sends a curveball throw spinning towards the ground. His own Ceruledge, a poor replacement for the one lost to Genevieve Cromwell, shoots out and glares at its twin. “But yer some bigwig ranger captain. Mauville, yeah?” He’d done his research, treating her like a target. It was just the professional thing to do, studying a target before going in for the kill.[break]
“Bet Walsh’d pay me the big bucks for yer head!” A glance to his Ceruledge. “Fetch it for me!” His shadowy knight needed no further instructions. As his Honedge pulls back, so does the black knight advance. His first order of business is to attack his twin, a bitter blade testing the other’s defenses.

annalise turns sharply on her heel, following the sound of his voice even though she can't pinpoint him through the trees. the rejection comes as anticipated — rockets never give ground to demands. it had been for her, mostly. she's a cornered animal trying to appear larger than she really is. she's a girl trying to hold onto belligerent anger so she can ignore the self-preserving fear that hums through her. [break][break]it becomes a herculean task once he steps into view. her shoulders stiffen, unconsciously preparing herself for more conflict — but he cuts her with his words instead. he knows her. he knows where she works. the realization that she's been perceived comes with the unsettling drumbeat thought that she is not safe. [break][break]this no-name dog finally stirs something in her. [break][break] the two ceruledge clash, bitter blade against bitter blade. hers is a bulwark, noiselessly sizing up hitoshi and his pokemon for itself with the defensive strike. vampiric flames lick against its armor, but it pushes through the pain to try and thrust the other ceruledge back. [break][break]"you're wrong," she lies with less assertion than usual. "did you even try to look me up?"[break][break]she feels her ceruledge's determination in her own veins, its power precariously within her grasp. she needs only to reach out and borrow it. [break][break]"who even are you anyways? some grunt?" [break][break]she didn't care to know before, but now the unknown of him poisons her thoughts.

Ceruledge little understands the drama playing out between his trainer and their target. All it knows is that there’s a fight to be had. Moving with the speed of youth, he pivots away from the ranger’s counterstrike, laughing and eager for the next round. Oblivious to any tension between the humans, the plume of ghostly flame atop his head flares.
“Who, me? I’m just Rocket’s black dog. Its weakest beast.” Though he smiles beneath his mask, though his tone seems playful, a chord of insecurity holds steady throughout the declaration. It is what Kanto’s rockets have dubbed him, knowing howard slayte had a hidden agenda when he made the appointment. After Walsh ratified the appointment, none could doubt his authority…[break]
…but they can whisper. They do whisper. They mock and bully and beat. He remembers mint frost’s words when Rocket’s elites gathered. They made him feel least among those gathered there, and so he bares his fangs at this woman to prove himself.[break]
“But that’s more than enough t’beat you, Henderson!” A glance at his Ceruledge, who awaits his order. “Try a shadow claw this time!” And so the young black knight does, dancing around the other and prodding him for an opening as if they were having a friendly match instead of fighting to the death.

weakest beast?[break][break]it's not a very intimidating way to introduce himself. annalise commits it to memory all the same. black dog. marked for death with a name — just as she is when he barks out her last name. there is no well-dressed lie to disguise the caught look that passes behind her blue eyes, so she doesn't try to refute him a second time. [break][break]"haven't you already tried before?" [break][break]she stalks the outskirts of the battlefield, walking a tightrope of indecision. instigation on one side, defensive strategizing on the other. [break][break]"and fucked it up?" [break][break]he's behind league lines and terribly cocky about it; maybe she should remind him of where he is and who he is. pink energy sparks at her fingertips as she harnesses a piece of her ceruledge's power as her own. she swipes her hand through the air and a band of psychic energy flies across the clearing toward hitoshi. [break][break]"fuck off, weakest beast. and get a better fucking title while you're at it!"[break][break]her ceruledge feeds off the rage moving through their connection like electricity through a circuit. it waltzes step-for-step with the other knight, following its movements with keen, appraising eyes. as the shadow claw reaches out, the ceruledge lunges backwards into a phantom force portal that swirls shut behind it. another portal opens up on the other side of hitoshi's pokemon and her ceruledge reappears, sword brandished to strike.

“Oh, y’know what they say,” his grin is full of ease false confidence, “second time’s the charm. C’mon.~ Show me a good time!” Divorced from all the anger and mire and the war, he does like to swordfight. It gives him peace like few other things in this world, even if he finds more and more that the violent ends of his violent delights offer him little pleasure.[break]
When she harnesses her Ceruledge’s power, that takes him by surprise. All his bravado, brief as it was, fades away. The Hasegawa Muramasa, ever at his side, rises in his defense. It places a shadow screen, spreading before the cut and dampening it before it can reach Hitoshi.[break]
“Oh man. Nice trick. I really need ta requisition one of those.” Grins the beast, rising from the ground as if he’s damp from the mud of fresh-turned roads, as if her men won’t be here soon. They can still dance for a little while, even if every assassin worth the title would tell you to run when the first strike doesn’t land.[break]
“Keep up the pressure Ceruledge!” His screen helps the Ceruledge avoid having its armor utterly crushed by the blow from its twin. Instead, pieces go flying. He raises his blade in a retaliation on the edge of another bitter blade, meant to siphon life and keep the party going.[break]
“C’mon. Try that again.”

[break][break] her psycho cut breaks against his quickly-drawn defense, losing the momentum and bite that could have impersonated her ceruledge's own blade. but the power is still there, tingling strangely in her veins, begging her to lean into his taunt. [break][break]hitoshi's ceruledge catches hers with a bitter blade, but it tries to retaliate with its own. a dance, a give and take, a deadlock — a monotony that annalise breaks up as she raises her arm, pink energy gathering in her palm, extending past her fingertips. a dagger in its own merit, but also an acceptance.[break][break]"fine."[break][break]the psycho cut is thrown, shoulder twisting with the follow through.

No bond born of a synergized soul binds Inoue Hitoshi to his Ceruledge. It is young, reckless, and its defenses are chipped away with every exchange. The other one seems a blade honed to a finer edge, one that will win out by way of training and its bond.[break]
It’s the first sign of trouble. All things, good and bad, come in threes. His mother told him that once, one of the few memories he has of her that aren’t fragmented. The thought surfaces in his mind unbidden as the psycho cut hurls towards him.[break]
The second sign comes in the form of a distant voice, shouting through the forest. It’s a cry of Captain!, meaning that Annalise Henderson will soon be backed up by at least one more soul and six more Pokemon. Terrible odds, especially when they are moving beyond the notion of fair conduct.[break]
Third is how unprepared he finds he is for the psycho cut, how unwieldy his own blade feels in his hands as he raises to defend against the blow. Someone once told him that cursed blades are quicker on their own, free of human hands, and he feels that painful truth as the cut rushes towards him.[break]
It’s trouble, but not for him. His Ceruledge takes a gashing blow from its elder, rushing back to defend him. Her cut faints his Ceruledge, which returns to him in a flash of red light.[break]
“Shit.” He growls. “Good cut.” It’s all the time he can spare for praise. Another ball, thrown in a far more practical style than that which released Ceruledge, unleashes his Arcanine.[break]
“Damn League and yer fancy suits.” He grumbles, mounting the Arcanine. “Just you wait ‘til I get me one.” His Arcanine’s howl conjures a bright morning sun, hoping to blind the ranger captain and cover his escape.
